The Child Who Wanders Away

My six-year-old is made of pure enthusiasm and lacks the ability to restrain her impulses. She isn’t “being naughty” and running away from us. Her brain is just moving a million miles a minute, and her feet follow suit.

I can’t count the number of times I have reached out to put a box in our grocery cart, turned, and she was already at the end of the aisle. At least at the store, she can only make it so far before I notice that she has walked off.

The really scary moments have been when she wanders away in a crowd. When we’re anywhere busy, like the mall or our local amusement park. There are so many people to block your view, and a child can get lost in an instant.

It truly makes your heart drop when you look down where your child should be standing, and not see them waiting for you. The Tag*a*Long is a solution to help keep your big kids right next to you!

What Is the Tag*a*Long?

The Tag*a*Long is a plastic handle that can be looped around just about anything. It was created as a way to keep big kids close to your stroller, but also has so many other uses.

We rarely use a stroller, because I prefer to babywear. Instead, I loop the Tag*a*Long around the strap of my diaper bag or around the edge of the shopping cart.

The Tag*a*Long is made from a flexible plastic that is BPA, PVC, and phthalate free. The length is perfect to allow your child a “just right” amount of freedom, while still keeping them right next to you.

The plastic is also really durable. There is no risk of this wearing out and breaking – it is tough and holds up when she leans over and relies on it to support her weight, like a little acrobat. There is not a weight rating listed on the product FAQs, just be watchful if your child likes this kind of antics.

While the plastic is top-rack dishwasher safe, I have found that it rarely gets dirty. I find it easiest just to wipe it off with a damp washcloth or baby wipe if something gets on the handle.

The installation is super easy – no tools or extra parts required. Just wrap the Tag*a*Long around anywhere you’d like to attach it, and thread the handle through the loop on the opposite end.

It’s recommended for ages 3+, and my six-year-old doesn’t think it’s “babyish” when I ask her to use it. She just loves that it is her home base (and it keeps her out of trouble!).

The Tag*a*Long is a family-invented product and made in the USA, an all-around great business to support!

Why It’s Better Than Just Holding Hands

My six-year-old daughter hates holding hands and is always sprinting away to look at something cool. We tell her to keep a hand on the cart, but then she just walks laps around the cart and is constantly tripping me or some other shopper.

She has a lot of sensory concerns and doesn’t like the way it feels when holding hands with an adult. She thinks your holding her too tightly and tries to wiggle her hand away from yours.

When using theTag*a*Long, she doesn’t have any reluctance over holding the plastic handle. Its smooth plastic doesn’t sound off the sensory alarm bells the same way holding hands does.

The Tag*a*Long can be great for fidgeters too – the little square tooth on the handle is flexible enough that they can kind of twiddle it back and forth while they’re holding on. It’s there to prevent a kid from putting their hand all the way through the handle and to distinguish it from other tether locations.

As long as your child is old enough and responsible enough to hold on to the Tag*a*Long handle, this is a great way to boost their confidence and independence.

When your child is constantly on the move, attach the Tag*a*Long handle to your stroller, shopping cart, or diaper bag to keep them close!

How Have We Liked It?

My favorite use for the Tag*a*Long handle has been keeping it looped on my diaper bag. Anytime I’ve got my diaper bag backpack on, my six-year-old knows to grab the handle and stay right next to me.

We also love it for shopping! I think every shopping cart needs a Tag*a*Long handle! It has enough length that my daughter was still able to stop and look at things on the shelves. But then the tug on the handle as I moved on was a gentle reminder for her to keep moving too!

She says that she loves using the handle because she doesn’t get in trouble for walking off! I think this is a win for both of us because she is able to be successful independently, and I’m able to be a nicer mom when I’m not yelling at her to get back over here!

My only real concern with the Tag*a*Long handle is if you use it on a shopping cart and then forget to take it back off at the end of your shopping trip.

The next time we go shopping, I’m going to try leaving the handle on my diaper bag in the cart, and then having her hold the handle from there. Fingers crossed that this works and prevents the risk of forgetting the handle on the cart!

It’s also great for keeping her safe in the parking lot! She stays right next to the cart and doesn’t need any reminders not to wander! I am all for any product that helps teach kids to manage themselves more independently!
